Valentineday　にはチョコレート、本日はチョコレートについて

心配する必要はありませんでした、父はすき焼きから寿司までどんな和食もぺろりと平らげました。

But at the end of his stay, when I asked what Japanese food he liked best, I was surprised to hear him praise the glories of Japanese chocolate! 

滞在が終わりかけた頃に、和食で一番気に入ったものは何か聞いたところ、日本のチョコレートの素晴らしさを賞賛するのを聞いて驚きました。

He wanted to know how they were able to make such delicious chocolate delicacies that were just the right size, texture and sweetness.

父は、ちょうど良い大きさで、食感や甘さも丁度良い、こんなに美味しいチョコレートを、日本人はどうやって作っているのか知りたがりました。

I had no answer, nor did any of the Japanese I asked. 

私も、私が尋ねた日本人も答えることはできませんでした。

In fact, they couldn't even tell me when the Japanese first started eating chocolate.

実際に、彼らは、いつ日本人が最初にチョコレートを食べ始めたのかについてさえ答えることは出来ませんでした。

Now, many years later, I searched the Internet for the answer but still couldn't find an explanation. 

何年も経った今頃になって、答えをインターネットで調べましたが、その説明を得ることは出来ませんでした。

But I was able to find out something about the long journey of chocolate from the jungles of the Yucatan to the chocolatiers of Harajuku.

しかし、ユカタン半島のジャングルから原宿のチョコレートおたくまで、チョコレートが伝わってきた長い道のりについて、調べることができました。

The Japanese first got a taste of chocolate in 1797 from Dutch sailors in Nagasaki.

日本人が最初にチョコレート味を手にしたのは1797年に、オランダの船員が長崎に持ち込んでからです。

It was first sold in some exclusive shops in Tokyo in 1878.Morinaga was the first to produce chocolate domestically in 1918 and Meiji jumped into the market in 1926.

1878年に、東京の高級店で最初に販売され、　森永が1918年に森永が最初に、国内でチョコレートを製造しました。それに続いて明治が1926年にマーケットに参入しました。

Chocolate was scarce during the war years but American soldiers made it a popular treat after the war.

チョコレートは、戦時中には不足していましたが、戦後アメリカ兵が人気のおやつにしました。

In 1960 Morinaga encouraged women to give men chocolate for Valentine's Day. Today Japan is a major producer of chocolate candy, but as much as they make and as delicious as it is, Japan still consumes less chocolate than most western countries.

1960年に、森永がバレンタインデイに女性が男性にチョコレートを送ることを奨励いたしました。　今日、日本はチョコレートの主生産国ですが、たくさん製造し、大変美味しいにもかかわらず、日本のチョコレート消費は西欧諸国より少ないのです。
