I thank President Bush
for his service to our nation
as well as the generosity
and cooperation
he has shown
throughout this transition.
Forty-four Americans
have now taken
the presidential oath.
The words have been spoken
during rising tides of prosperity
and the still waters of peace.
Yet, every so often
the oath is taken
amidst gathering clouds
and raging storms.

I thank President Bush

and for the kindness
and help
he gave us
during this change in government.
I am the 44th American
to make the promise
to become president.
Other presidents made that promise
in times of a strong economy
and in times of peace.
But sometimes
that promise is made
under dark clouds
and in terrible storms.
